After a long absence, Chevrolet brings back rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan power -- and not just for the police. The 2014 Chevy SS promises to be a great successor to the beloved and short-lived Pontiac G8.

What's New for 2014

The 2014 Chevrolet SS is an all-new model.

Introduction

Fans of 21st century Detroit muscle, rejoice: The Pontiac G8 is back -- in spirit if not in sheet metal, anyway. The beloved G8 only lasted two years before Pontiac closed its doors, dashing enthusiast hopes for stealthy rear-wheel-drive V8 power most could afford and use every day. The 2014 Chevrolet SS looks to reignite those hopes.

This Australian-built rear-drive sedan will use the same underpinnings as that country's Holden Commodore, and is essentially a civilian version of the Chevrolet Caprice PPV sold to American police departments. The Caprice cop car offers both a 3.6-liter V6 and a 6.0-liter V8, the latter generating 335 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.

Given the limited nature of the Chevy SS, we expect it to offer only a V8, perhaps even the 6.2-liter version used in the current Camaro SS. That engine makes 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque in the six-speed manual-equipped Camaro SS (400 hp and 410 lb-ft with the six-speed automatic). We expect the SS to offer a standard six-speed automatic transmission, but like the top-performing G8 GXP model before it, we hold out hope for the optional six-speed manual.

The 2014 SS will also serve as the base car for Chevrolet's 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup campaign, with a likely debut at the Daytona 500 in February. The production SS is expected at dealers in late 2013.
