What's New for 2014

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado will benefit from weight reduction and a brand-new, more fuel-efficient V8.

Introduction

Let's face it: Most truck buyers accept their fate at the gas pump. You buy a truck so it can do some heavy lifting, which entails heavy combustion and consumption. Any other reasons -- style, image, elevated ride height -- usually get washed out as fuel prices rise. But as truckmakers have started offering more fuel-efficient V6 engines, the next-generation 2014 Chevrolet Silverado is expected to buck that trend and stick with exclusive V8 power.

Chevy executives bet that most Silverado buyers will use it for their livelihoods or vacation kicks. Farmers, ranchers, contractors, fifth-wheel enthusiasts -- Chevy believes these folks prize power and towing capacity over fuel economy, and still need a workhorse truck.

Don't think that Chevy is indifferent to fuel economy, however. The new Silverado is expected to use GM's forthcoming new-generation direct-injection V8, rumored to displace 5.5 liters, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The truck is also going on a diet, shedding weight through more extensive use of aluminum and high-strength steel. It should be enough to make the next Silverado the most fuel-efficient yet.

Outside, the Silverado isn't expected to stray far from current proportions. A new grille and front fascia are a given. Inside, Chevrolet will likely improve the Silverado's upholstery, dash and panel materials, as the Dodge Ram has been much superior in this regard the past few years. Recent spy shots also show a large center display, most likely a 6- or 8-inch touchscreen that will control Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment interface.

We'll see if GM's V8 gamble pays off when the 2014 Silverado 1500 reaches dealers in the spring of 2013. Check back for a full review of the Silverado, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice as it becomes available.
