The Impala is redesigned for 2014.

Introduction

All automakers should adhere to at least this one rule: reviving a classic nameplate requires that you also reconstitute its DNA. Chevrolet ignored its ethical responsibility when re-introducing the current-generation Impala not as the streamlined midcentury muscle car for which it is best known. Nor was there any concession to its mid-'90s role as a Corvette in cop car clothing, a highway bruiser powered by a 5.7-liter V8.

Instead, Chevrolet recast the Impala as a front-wheel-drive full-size sedan, low on power from a buzzy V6 and with all the personality of a sweater vest. Enthusiasts were disappointed, but rental fleet managers nationwide seemed content.

The fully redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala looks to claw back some of its legacy. It gets sharp new lines and body creases, with a vaguely Camaro-esque face, and a range of 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels. Xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights come standard on LTZ models. The new Impala rides on about a 1-inch longer wheelbase, and overall length gains about an inch as well.

There will be three engine choices, including the carryover direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 that makes 303 horsepower, a 182-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder with the eAssist hybrid system, and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder generating 195 horses. All three engines hook up to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA hasn't yet rated the 2014 Impala, but GM says Chevy Impalas equipped with eAssist should achieve 35 mpg on the highway. The current 2012 Impala with the 3.6-liter V6 is hardly a guzzler, though, returning a very respectable 18 mpg city/30 mpg highway.

Chevrolet also gives the Impala a full interior redesign, with an 8-inch touchscreen display in the revised center stack, an available navigation system and the MyLink smartphone integration system. Trunk volume, just shy of 19 cubic feet, remains impressive. The new Impala also gets a comprehensive array of safety features, including 10 airbags, lane-departure warning, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera and rear parking assist.
