2013 BMW 1 Series Coupe - FROM $31,200

It's not the 1 Series M, but we'll take it. The 2013 BMW 135is ratchets up the raw performance of the very capable 1 Series.

What's New for 2013

The 2013 BMW 1 Series receives a new performance-oriented trim level, the 135is.

Introduction

BMW hasn't said whether it plans to reprise the spectacular -- and spectacularly limited -- 1 Series M. The automaker does, however, plan to offer the 2013 BMW 135is, a more caffeinated edition of the standard 1 Series. The 135is coaxes 320 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque from its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. This splits the difference between the base 135i and the 1 Series M, and considering that the latter has been discontinued, we'll take it. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual is optional.

Upgrades from the standard 1 Series include firmer suspension tuning, performance exhaust and an upgraded cooling system for the engine. Bundled with the standard M Sport package, exterior highlights include exclusive 18-inch wheels, black mirror caps and unique badges, while stainless-steel pedal covers and optional black leather seats with blue stitching dress up the cabin.

The 135is will be available in both coupe and convertible styles when it goes on sale this fall. The coupe starts at $44,145 and the convertible rings in at $48,845. Check back for a full review of the 2013 BMW 1 Series, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice as it becomes available.
